When You’re Bad at a Game You Love

Hyper Light Drifter

During the Steam Summer sale, I bought Hyper Light Drifter. It’s been on my wishlist for quite some time and now seemed as good a time as any to pick it up. It’s a gorgeous game. The art, audio, and animation are just astounding. That might seem extreme, but for me, it checks off all the boxes. The only problem is, I’m pretty bad at the game. In fact, I just rage quit and decided to write this. So what do you do when you love a game, but you just can’t get through it? Continue reading

The Adventures of Old Edna – It’s Better Alone

The Blood Starved Beast

Over the past day and a half I have been slowly becoming one with my couch. I’m pretty sure I’ve had strep throat. It’s been a time filled with airborne, cough drops, hot tea with honey, and Bloodborne. During that time playing the game, I made my way through all of Old Yharnam and took down its boss, the Blood Starved Beast. This boss fight took only one try and was highly underwhelming. Continue reading

The Adventures of Old Edna – Part 1

This is the first video for a play through series I’m going to be doing with Bloodborne. I had some technical issues with the audio. The game audio is a good bit louder than my mic. I should have this fixed for the next video. I hope you enjoy Old Edna’s exploration of Old Yharnam.

Why We Love Boss Fights

Father Gascoigne

This past weekend, I booted up Bloodborne and started playing with one goal in mind. I was going to take down my first boss in the game. I had accidentally stumbled onto Father Gascoigne during my first play through and was definitely caught unprepared. This time, I was going for the Cleric Beast. I had a good idea of where he was, and I was prepared for a tough fight. Turns out, he was really easy. Since I had already psyched myself up for a tough boss fight, I decided to head straight for Father Gascoigne again. That was the fight I was looking for. It got me thinking about why games have boss fights, and why they are simultaneously so frustrating and so fun. Continue reading

The Adventures of Old Edna – The Hunt Begins

I started playing Bloodborne last night. This is my first time playing a ‘Souls’ game. After several hours, I was completely hooked. To be honest, I was sold after the first 30 minutes. After so much hype about how great of a game it is and so much talk about how crushingly difficult it is, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Now, I can safely say that this is a game I will be spending a lot of time with. Like I said, I haven’t played more than 2 to 3 hours of it, but here are some of my initial thoughts. Why I Play Video Games

Game Controller

I have recently been looking forward to playing two newly released games: Bloodborne and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. My anticipation of these two games, specifically The Witcher 3, made me stop and wonder what it was that made me want to play them so badly. This naturally lead to the question, why do I play video games at all? Continue reading
